The A470's
University of Glamorgan Big Band
The A470s is a Union-supported music society and has membership which is open to the public (the 25-strong band is made up of students, staff and local musicians.)
The Band’s aim is “to provide a quality musical experience for players and listeners whilst using its gigs to raise funds for local and national charities”. Having raised many thousands of pounds in the past 14 years the band motto ‘Giggin 4 u 4 othrs!’ is apt.
The A470s reached the last 100 of the first Britain’s Got Talent competition in 2007 (from an entry of 50,000 acts). Foreign tours are an important musical and social aspect of the Band and it is proud to boast that in 2007 and 2008 it performed in the renowned Guinness Cork International Jazz Festival (including the festival launch party).
The band does not audition members: a minimum Grade 6 equivalent is expected although it has players of diploma and professional standard.
The A470s prepares a varied programme of Swing, Latin, Funk, Rock and Blues (from Miller to Queen, Ellington to Van Morrison) to a high standard of performance. As well as playing for charity the band gigs on campus (including summer and Fresher’s Balls), in the community (including for corporate functions), and in bars and clubs across South Wales, the UK and Internationally.
Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings with the band led by a professional MD, for both rehearsal and performance.
The band has quality brass and woodwind instruments available to loan to members, thanks to a lottery grant.
Interesting fact: The A470 road- second only in stature to the world famous Route 66 - runs from Cardiff to Llandudno via Trefforest and so gives its name to the University Big Band!
