What is Student Council?
Student Council is run by you, the students. It is the main policy making body of the Students’ Union. It is responsible for discussing the various issues that affect students, and setting the Union’s overall political direction. This year, the Students’ Union has introduced 16 Standing Committees that feed into Student Council; with each committee representing a particular group of students.
What are the benefits of getting involved with a committee?
• You have an opportunity to shape the direction of the Students’ Union.
• An opportunity to develop your skills; with in-house training scheduled for reps.
• Looks fansatic on your CV.
• Presented with a certificate at the end of the year to certify you have helped out.
• Feel part of a community: with socials specifically for Student Council members.
• You are able to get your hands on Student Council hoodies at the discounted rate of £15!
• Chance to get involved with trips to other Unions, and to attend conferences as a Union rep.
• Opportunity to take part in a mini module, which will give you extra credits for your degree.
How much time will it take up?
Each committee will meet at times decided by its members; no fewer than five times a year. The chair of each committee also has to attend Student Council meetings. This academic year, Student Council meetings have been scheduled for:
Thursday 27th October 2011
Thursday 8th December 2011
Thursday 16th February 2012
Thursday 22nd March 2012
Thursday 17th May 2012
Next Student Council meetings and election process starts out in September at the Freshers Fayre.
How can I get involved with a committee?
Every year elections are run to elect chair persons and committee members for 16 different standing committees. These committees represent a students on every level. To get involved nomination packs are available before the elections which need to be filled in and returned to the Union before a certain date. Once all the nominations are in, voting will take place on GlamSU. This is done via Glamlife just like the major elections.
Lookout for the Student Council stall at Freshers Fayre, online promotions and in the Students' Union buildings.
Unfortunately, if you are a Course Representative or Student Voice Representative then you are not able to take a position on a Standing Committee.
What committees are available to join?
There are currently 16 different Standing Committees, each with their own website.

Who sits on Student Council altogether?
In addition to the chair of each committee, Student Council also has a representative from each faculty (CCI, HESAS, HASS, AT, BUS) to bring forward academic issues. This representative will be selected from Course Representatives.
The four paid executive officers are expected to attend, in order to give reports on what are have been doing in their role. Altogether, there are 25 voting members at Student Council.
The Chair of Student Council oversees the meeting and has the casting vote in the event of a tie.
I don’t have time to get involved – how will Student Council benefit me?
Student Council representatives are meant to take your views forward. Contact your representatives on the appropriate Standing Committee, and tell them what you want changed! Alternatively, any student can write submit a motion to Student Council. You need to write a motion in a particular format:

Once you have written your motion, you need to find another student to second it. You also need 20 students to support the motion. Each of these students needs to give their signature, along with valid enrolment numbers.
The completed motion must be submitted to the SU reception (at any campus) or to the Chair of Student Council. This must be done within a permitted time frame; no earlier than 15 working days before a Student Council meeting and no later than 10 working days before the meeting.
Your motion can then be discussed at Student Council. The students who proposed/seconded the motion are entitled to speak about the motion, before the issue is voted on by Student Council. All students are able to sit as observers on Student Council.
